Of all the skin cancers, melanoma represents the greatest challenge and finding early curable primary tumors is imperative to prevent metastatic (spreading) disease and death.  At the present time, the most critical tool for conquering this malignancy is by identification of early melanomas during clinical examination.  Early changes in the "ABCDE's" of a lesion are helpful in cautioning a patient to seek dermatologic evaluation; these stand for asymmetry, border irregularity, color changes, diameter expansion, and evolution of a baseline mole or new mole.  If you notice a mole different from others, or which changes, itches, or bleeds, please come for an examination.
