Hives, also known as Urticaria

They present as localized, pale, itchy, pink wheals or swellings that can burn, sting or itch.  They may occur singularly or in groups on any part of the skin.  Allergic reactions, chemicals, medications and stress may cause hives; sometimes it is impossible to find out the cause.  Severe cases may cause difficulty in breathing or swallowing and then require emergent treatment.  The evaluation and treatment are geared to eliminate the cause whenever possible.
