What is UV radiation?

Radiation is the emission (sending out) of energy from any source. There are many types of radiation.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a form of electromagnetic radiation. The main source of UV radiation (rays) is the sun, although it can also come from man-made sources such as tanning beds and welding torches.

Radiation exists across a spectrum from very high-energy (high-frequency) radiation – like x-rays and gamma rays – to very low-energy (low-frequency) radiation – like radio waves. UV rays have more energy than visible light, but not as much as x-rays. Higher energy UV rays often have enough energy to remove an electron from (ionize) an atom or molecule, making them a form of ionizing radiation. Ionizing radiation can damage DNA in the cells in our body, which in turn may lead to cancer. But because UV rays don’t have enough energy to penetrate deeply into the body, their main effect is on the skin.

Protect your skin with clothing and wear a hat to protect your head, face, and neck. Wear sunglasses that block UV to protect your eyes and the skin around them. Use sunscreen to help protect skin that isn’t covered with clothing.

By learning the risks associated with too much sun exposure and taking the right precautions to protect you and your family from UV rays, everyone can enjoy the sun and outdoors safely.
Here are the harmful things unprotected sun exposure can do:

  • Premature aging of the skin
  • Skin cancer

ENHANCE

Excessive Sweating

The condition of uncontrollable sweating can be embarrassing and disabling, significantly impacting social and professional performance and quality of life. This can be localized (usually affecting the underarms, palms or soles) or generalized. There are many treatments available, all aimed at sweat reduction. These treatments range from topical prescriptions, oral agents, tap water iontophoresis, botulinum toxin type A injections, to surgery.
For some people, sweating can go into overdrive. Severe underarm sweating, also known as severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis, is a condition in which the body sweats more than it has to in order to regulate body temperature. The severity of the condition is based on the extent it interferes with your daily activities.
BOTOX® is injected into the skin to treat the symptoms of severe underarm sweating (severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis) when medicines used on the skin (topical) do not work well enough in people 18 years and older.
