How Does Botox Work?

You have probably heard about a friend or family member getting Botox. Maybe you’ve seen the results for yourself. But how exactly does it work? At Dermatology & Aesthetic Center of El Paso, we are experts in cosmetic dermatology. Here is a rundown of everything you need to know to make an educated decision on applying the procedure to your skin.

WHAT IS BOTOX?
Botox is actually a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Scientists were able to harness the side effect of paralysis of this toxin. By using small, diluted amounts, it proved to be very beneficial for cosmetic and medical purposes. In the 1980s, the drug was used for eye complications like crossed eyes, uncontrolled blinking, and lazy eye. It was soon found to diminish wrinkles. In 2002, the FDA approved the substance for cosmetic dermatology purposes. As time has progressed, more and more uses have been discovered. It has been effective at soothing migraines, muscle stiffness, excessive sweating and even overactive bladder.

HOW DOES BOTOX WORK?
Botox injections block signals between the nerve and the muscle. The injection site muscle can no longer contract and so wrinkles and fine lines relax and soften. The effects last for several months. After the treatment wears off the lines will return. However, repeated treatments will condition the muscles to contract less and soften lines naturally.

HOW IS A PROCEDURE DONE?
This aesthetic procedure is quick and easy. You always want to make sure an expert is administering injections, as the slightest mistakes can cause problems. At our practice, you will not receive treatments by a nurse or other assistant. We only have board certified physicians administering cosmetic, medical and surgical dermatology treatments. Botox treatment for cosmetic purposes only takes a few minutes and it doesn’t require anesthesia. The Botox is injected through a fine needle, and it usually takes a few days for the full effect to show. It is best to avoid aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications to avoid bruising up to five days before the procedure.
