Answers to your Cosmetic Dermatology Questions

Are you comfortable in your own skin? We are passionate about helping our patients be more confident through medical and cosmetic dermatology treatments. We have years of experience studying the skin and employing advanced skin treatments, and we love answering questions about everything from hair to nails to skin. Here are a few of the questions we get the most often!

“MY HAIR IS SHEDDING. IS THAT NORMAL?”
We get this question all the time, and we always reassure our patients that it is completely normal to lose anywhere from 50 to 100 hairs a day. Brushing and dying our hair contributes to hair loss, and inexpensive hair products can also dry out our hair follicles and cause the hairs to fall out. Even general hairstyling (think ponytails, braids, and ballet buns) can lead to a few hair casualties. So what can be done? If you are only losing 50 hairs a day, you needn’t worry. Hair is regenerative, and it will grow back! However, if you notice that you are losing an excessive amount of hair or that your hair is thinning, you should consult with a dermatologist.

“IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I CAN DO ABOUT MY ACNE, ROSACEA, AND PIGMENT SPOTS?”
Beyond over the counter skin care products and traditional beauty methods, dermatologists offer a wide range of cosmetic dermatology treatments that are designed specifically to treat problem skin. For acne, we offer laser treatment via our ELOS system. This gentle and innovative treatment uses blue light, intense pulsed light energy and bipolar radiofrequency to target bacteria, slow oil gland production, and zap away existing blemishes. It also helps with acne scars. We also use a light system known as Skin Rejuvenation or Photofacial RF (consisting of IPL and bi-polar radiofrequency) to treat rosacea, pigment spots, and other skin imperfections. This treatment lessens the redness from the vascular inflammation and brown or grayish pigmentation.

“WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS TO ACHIEVE YOUNGER LOOKING SKIN?”
When it comes to achieving a youthful glow, the treatment options are as diverse as the people who use them. Botox and dermal fillers are two popular, minimally invasive options. Talk with Dr. Karen, who is passionate about cosmetic dermatology and has achieved expert advanced training, to learn the difference between injectables. If you prefer a process that requires no recovery time, you may want to consider microdermabrasions or chemical peels. These rejuvenating treatments remove dead skin cells and can reduce the appearance of fine lines. As the process is repeated (patients usually get treatment a few times over the course of several weeks) new and healthy skin cells begin to move to the surface. The result is fresh, vibrant skin.
